What Is the Ceramix Nano?

The Ceramix Nano is a capsule-based 3D printer designed specifically for in-office crown fabrication. At just 4.6 lbs and 5.31″ × 3.43″ × 10.79″ — smaller than most countertop coffee makers — it is one of the most compact dental fabrication devices ever brought to market. It prints and cures permanent ceramic restorations in a single device, with no separate curing unit required.

The Ceramix Nano connects to the Shining 3D Dental Cloud ecosystem, enabling a complete scan-to-seat workflow in a single patient visit. From intraoral scan to final seated restoration — no lab, no temporary, no follow-up appointment.

The Shining 3D C&B Workflow

The Ceramix Nano is designed around Shining 3D’s five-step chairside workflow:

Patient Scanning → AI Design → Chairside Printing → Post Processing → Final Restoration Delivery

After scanning, the Shining 3D AI Design Center generates a crown proposal in approximately 2 minutes. The dentist reviews and approves the design online — and is only charged $1–$3 per design when they confirm and download. The Ceramix Nano then receives the print job via cloud dispatch and produces the restoration in under 10 minutes using Shining 3D’s proprietary APS (Advanced Printing System) technology. Built-in 90°C curing completes the process in the same device.

The result: a patient who walks out with their permanent crown the same day they sat down for preparation.

Lumicera Resin — FDA Class II 510(k) Cleared

The Ceramix Nano uses Lumicera Ceramix resin capsules — a ceramic-dominant permanent resin with greater than 55% ceramic filler, FDA Class II 510(k) cleared for definitive restorations with proven biocompatibility.

Material specifications:

  • Flexural Strength: 200 MPa — comparable to natural tooth strength (210 ± 67 MPa)
  • Fatigue: 800 N for 10 million chewing cycles — far exceeding the 2.4 million cycle benchmark widely accepted as 10 years of clinical service
  • Hardness: 40 HV0.5
  • Bond Strength: 20 MPa

Available shades at launch: BL, A1, A2, B1, C2. Additional shades coming.

Insurance Reimbursement

Per the ADA’s 2023 update to ceramic material definition, 3D-printed restorations with greater than 50% ceramic filler qualify for reimbursement at the same rate as milled or pressed ceramic restorations. Ceramix Nano restorations are reimbursable under the following CDT codes:

  • Full Crown — D2740: ~$1,168 average billed fee
  • Onlay (2/3/4+ surfaces) — D2642/D2643/D2644: $800–$1,300
  • Inlay (1/2/3+ surfaces) — D2650/D2651/D2652: $400–$650

At the D2740 average reimbursement rate, the Ceramix Nano pays for itself in 5 to 6 cases. For most practices doing moderate crown volume, that is less than one week of production.

Optional Aesthetic Curing Kit

For practices seeking premium anterior finishing, the optional Ceramix Nano Aesthetic Curing Kit is available separately at $700. The kit adds N2/CO2 gas curing capability for oxygen-free surface finishing after stain and glaze application — locking in a flawless, lifelike result in approximately 30 seconds. The kit uses standard N2 or CO2 mini cartridges available anywhere online for under $2 each, with approximately 5 curing cycles per cartridge. Running cost: under $0.40 per restoration.
