A sensor barrier shield is a necessary item to use when taking digital dental x-rays. The sensor barrier shield prevents the sensor from coming into direct contact with the patients’ mouths, thus preventing water damage to the sensor as well as helping to prevent the spread of germs.

Unfortunately, if the barrier shield is not properly removed form the sensor, it is possible to cause unnecessary strain on the sensor cable, shortening the life of the sensor significantly. By pulling the sensor by the cable when removing the sensor barrier shield it is as if you are trying to pull the cable out of the sensor.  Using this method of removal for the barrier shield will eventually cause damage to the sensor cable and connections within the sensor.

How Not To Remove A Sensor Barrier Shield

The photo above is an example of what not to do. Attempting to pull the barrier shield while holding onto the sensor cable causes strain on the cable. Over time, this can cause the cable to break down and may eventually make the sensor pre-trigger or fail altogether.

How To Properly Remove a Sensor Barrier Shield

This photo, however, demonstrates the proper way to remove the shield. Hold the sensor head with both hands and push the sensor head out of the shield in much the same was as you would squeeze toothpaste out of the tube.

Following this simple procedure will help to ensure a long and happy life for your sensor and will minimize the chances of your sensor needing repair or replacement.
