If your Shining 3D Aoralscan scans quickly, but the IntraoralScan software turns laggy, slow or freezes the moment you try to rotate, edit or work with the 3D model, look at your graphics driver. We see this most on computers with an NVIDIA RTX 50-series card (RTX 5060, 5070 and up). The fix for a Shining 3D RTX 50 series computer is a specific NVIDIA driver, installed clean.

This isn’t our guess. Shining 3D’s own IntraoralScan PC requirements tell RTX 50-series owners to run IntraoralScan version 3.6.5.X or higher and NVIDIA driver 581.57. Newer drivers can bring back the slow image response and the lag in the model view.

Before You Start

  • Sit at the computer. Don’t do this over remote desktop. You’ll need Safe Mode for the cleanest result, and remote sessions drop when the computer restarts.
  • Plan on 15 to 20 minutes and a couple of reboots. Do it after the last patient.
  • If your IT company locks down your computers, you may not be able to get into Safe Mode or change drivers yourself. Call them first, or call us.
  • Check which card you have. Shining 3D lists the RTX 5050 as not supported, so this fix won’t help on that card.

What You’ll Need

  • NVIDIA driver 581.57 (Game Ready). It’s an older release now, so NVIDIA won’t offer it by default. Go to NVIDIA’s driver page, search for your card, and pick 581.57 from the list of older drivers. Can’t find it? Give us a call and we’ll walk you to it.
  • Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU), a free tool that removes the old driver completely: download DDU.
  • The IntraoralScan package marked for NVIDIA RTX 50 Series GPU, version 3.6.5.X or higher. The regular package for 30 and 40-series cards isn’t built for 50-series cards.

Shining 3D RTX 50 Series Fix: Clean Install of Driver 581.57

  1. Download the driver first. Save the 581.57 installer somewhere easy to find, like your Desktop or Downloads folder. Don’t install it yet.
  2. Download and unzip DDU. Extract the zip file so Display Driver Uninstaller.exe is ready to run.
  3. Boot into Safe Mode.
    • Hold Shift while you click Restart (or go to Windows Settings, System, Recovery, Advanced startup).
    • Choose Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, then Startup Settings, then Restart.
    • Press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode.
  4. Remove the old driver with DDU.
    • In Safe Mode, run DDU.
    • Select GPU, then NVIDIA.
    • Click Clean and restart. The computer reboots back into normal Windows.
  5. Install driver 581.57.
    • Run the installer you downloaded in step 1.
    • Choose Custom (Advanced) and check Perform a clean installation.
    • Make sure Graphics Driver and NVIDIA Control Panel are both selected.
    • Finish the install and reboot when it asks.

NVIDIA Control Panel Settings

After the last reboot:

  1. Right-click the desktop and open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Go to Manage 3D Settings, then Program Settings.
  3. Add the IntraoralScan program and set it to High-performance NVIDIA processor.
  4. Set Threaded Optimization to Off.
  5. Set Power management mode to Prefer maximum performance.
  6. Click Apply.

While you’re at it, set the Windows power plan to Best performance, and make sure the scanner software saves its orders to an SSD, not a spinning hard drive or a network folder.

If the Lag Comes Back

After these steps, scanning should stay fast and rotating or editing the model should feel responsive again.

Windows Update and the NVIDIA app both like to swap in a newer driver on their own. If the lag shows up again a few weeks from now, that’s usually why. Repeat the clean install of 581.57 and you’ll be back where you were.
